Introduction - Personal and Social Competence

The Department of Education, Training and Employment (DETE) defines Personal and Social Competence as a general capability within the Australian Curriculum which identifies age-appropriate concepts that can be taught throughout the years of schooling in:

  • self-awareness;
  • self-management;
  • social awareness;
  • social management.
Students with well developed social and emotional skills find it easier to manage themselves, relate to others, develop resilience and a sense of self-worth, resolve conflict, engage in teamwork and feel positive about themselves and the world around them. The development of personal and social capability is a foundation for learning and for citizenship.

~ excerpt from ACARA - F-10 Curriculum

In the Australian Curriculum, students develop personal and social capability as they learn to understand themselves and others, and manage their relationships, lives, work and learning more effectively. The capability involves students in a range of practices including recognising and regulating emotions, developing empathy for others and understanding relationships, establishing and building positive relationships, making responsible decisions, working effectively in teams, handling challenging situations constructively and developing leadership skills.

The Australian Education system is continuously working on ways to provide effective education for our students.

Yoga in Education

When used in education, yoga is a system that teaches self-awareness, self-care and self-management by tuning into the body, the breath and the mind. The practice of yoga reduces stress, achieves emotional balance and enhances cognition.

Yoga provides an opportunity to create an inclusive environment where students with differing abilities and adults can be joyfully involved. When everyone feels included in a process he/she experiences enhanced social interaction, learning, focus, confidence, expression and play.

Yoga Tools For Schools Programs

Professional Development

Yoga Tools For Schools Professional Development Training Programs inspire educators to model and share Yoga Tools to nourish, balance and support teaching and learning during class time, with no extra space or equipment required.

Our trainings are two fold ... to support educators personally and also to support the learning experience for students.

The purpose of Yoga Tools For Schools Professional Development Training Programs is to:

  • Understand that yoga is a mind-body system about honouring and supporting oneself in order to be the best one can be
  • Empower educators to use Yoga Tools along with students to model the importance of self-care and experience the benefits of yoga breaks
  • Inspire educators to use Yoga Tools to support and improve productivity during lesson time rather than use yoga as a supplemental activity
  • Introduce educators to Yoga Tools with the intention to nourish, balance and support teaching and learning.
